I walked into the assembly hall. Searching through the crowd, I craned my neck to try to find Evelyn. I walked down the steps in the gym until I noticed a familiar green jacket that caught my eye. Walking up to her, I asked. “Hey, is this seat taken?”

Evelyn smiled when she saw me. “It is now,” she said and patted the open spot on the bench next to her.

I took my seat and noticed Colt was sitting next to her as well. “’Sup, Colt,” I said and nodded at him.

He nodded back. “I heard there was quite the drama at the Lopez house yesterday.”

I shot him and Evelyn a grin. “You can say that again.”

Evelyn patted me on the arm. “Are you doing okay?”

I nodded. “Yeah, I guess so.” My eyes shifted through the gym, looking for more familiar faces, but the crowd was so thick it was hard to see. “It’s just a lot to take in.”

“I’ll say,” Colt said. “Brett called me after it happened. He seemed really upset.”

I leaned forward. “Really?”

“Yeah.” Colt nodded. “Then a couple minutes later, Brennan called me.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “Sounds like you heard more about it more than you wanted to.”

Colt grinned. “Exactly.”

“Speaking of Brennan,” I said, looking around once more. “Where is he?”

“I don’t know.” Colt shrugged. “I’d like to know myself.”

Searching through the crowd once more, I noticed Shannon and her entourage forcing their way through the wave of people. I glared at her so fiercely you would have thought lasers were about to pop out of my eyes and zap her. How dare she make out with Brett in front of me just because she saw me walking down the hall. Knowing her, she probably realized it wouldn’t be the first time I mixed up the two of them. I couldn’t stand the fact that she had gotten the best of me for so long.

Her eyes finally met mine, and her lips curved upwards into a smirk. “Looks like someone’s in a bad mood,” she said in a voice so preppy I wanted to hurl. Ashley snickered as they kept walking, but Haley looked back with a sympathetic look on her face.

I thought it was so sweet that Haley looked sorry for me. She probably knew all about Shannon’s plans to ruin any chances I had with Brennan. In a way, I felt sorry for her, too. She probably had to heel to Shannon’s every command. The very thought made me shudder.

The principal tapped on a microphone, drawing my attention to the front of the gym. “Good Afternoon,” Mr. Banks said in a cheery voice. “I have a couple of announcements I need to get to, but first, we have a special message from Brennan Lopez.”

Brennan stood up from one of the benches and grabbed the mic. I noticed he was wearing his letterman jacket, the one specifically designed for football players.

In his hand, he held a football, but I could tell there was something sparkly on it.
